There is an occasional alder bottom, hemlock is quite common, bull pine is found in a few localities, and yew, dog-wood and crab-apple occur upon all the islands. There is a dense undergrowth of salal, whortle, salmon, raspberry and other bushes, and shrubs. Wild Animals. Black bear, land otter, marten, weasel and mice, are so far as known, the only native animals upon the islands.
DOG-WOOD. This is planted in pleasuregrounds as an ornamental shrub, and from the red appearance of the wood in the winter forms a beautiful constrast in plantations. It is also used by butchers for making skewers. CORYLUS Avellana. THE HAZEL. Is a well known shrub of large growth producing nuts, which are much admired. The Filbert is an improved variety of this plant.

He knew flower, plant, bush, and weed, the bark and leaf of every tree, and even In winter he could pick them out in the gray etching of a mountain-side dog-wood, red-bud, "sarvice" berry, hickory, and walnut, the oaks white, black, and chestnut the majestic poplar, prized by the outer world, and the black-gum that defied the lightning. All this the dreamy stranger had taught him, and much more.
Suddenly he turned, and half rising struck with all his strength. The dog-wood fork fairly bounced upon the Indian's head. "Wagh!" gasped Tutelu. He had been knocked forward, so that he fell with his two hands and almost with his face into his fire. Instantly he was up, before the doctor might strike again. He ran howling, with his head bloody. He had no stomach for another blow.
