It was painted for the Pratoneri chapel in the church of S. Prospero at Reggio, but it was not fixed in its destined place till 1530. It is said that it was removed surreptitiously by order of Francesco I., the reigning Duke of Modena, who substituted a copy. The same story, however, is related of Correggio's Ancona, painted for the church of the Conventuals at Correggio.

All realised that they stood upon the threshold of the chapel and that the conventuals had taken refuge there. Mr. Butler checked upon a sudden suspicion. "Maybe, after all, they've taken us for French," said he. A trooper ventured to answer him. "Best let them see we're not before we have the whole village about our ears."

It cannot have been much later that the church of S. Pier Maggiore, of which I have already spoken, came into Franciscan hands, and certainly from 1261 it was called S. Francesco, when the archbishop Filippo Fontana handed it over to the Conventuals who held it till 1810.

Those who had gone through a three or four years' course of theology creditably had a distinct right to a post of some dignity, and took rank immediately after those priests of the order who had celebrated their jubilee, and before all conventuals who had an inferior record as to studies. The faithful discharge of offices for a prolonged period was also rewarded by honourable recognition.

There, huddled before the main altar like a flock of scared and stupid sheep, he beheld the conventuals some two score of them perhaps and in the dim light of the heavy altar lamp above them he could make out the black and white habit of the order of St. Dominic. He came to a halt, raised his lantern aloft, and called to them peremptorily: "Ho, there!"

With his conventuals, who had found refuge at Einsiedeln in Schwyz, he kept up a constant correspondence. Through his relatives he secured a devoted party in Toggenburg, and, by means of the monies at his command, adherents in various parts of Switzerland to undertake and further his cause. Zwingli's stay in Marburg was of great service to him.

Once more I think it necessary to start with a caution. Not only do I propose to take no account here of that large class of conventuals which comprehended the mendicant order or friars as they are called, but I must needs pass by with little or no notice the various orders of regular canons-i.e., canons living under a rule. The friars came into England first in 1220.
