"She hath written two Breviaries, I wis." "Two!" said Sir Geoffrey, laughing. "One for Sundays and feasts, and the other for week-days? Madge, bring us both of them." Margery left the room, and returned in a few minutes, with both the books in her hand. Sir Geoffrey took them, and opened the illuminated one the genuine Breviary first.

The truth is that, though all these personages have had sceptres in their hands, scrolls, ribands, and breviaries, not one of them displays the attributes which would serve to identify them in accordance with the religious symbolism of the Middle Ages.

As they were going to a religious festival, some of them had brought their breviaries along with them; but I am obliged to testify that, after the first day, prayers were totally forgotten. The sailors, however, wore linen bags, printed with a figure of the Madonna, around their necks.

Synonyms for the term "semi-duplex," are "non-duplex," "office of nine lessons." The antiphons are not doubled in a semi-double office. The Sundays of the year, excepting Easter Sunday, Low Sunday, Pentecost and Trinity, are said according to the semi-double rite. In the new Breviaries the Psalms for Matins are only nine in number, instead of the eighteen of the older book.

"Breviaries!" was whispered along the rows, and the eyes of the fat genial faces blinked in helpless embarrassment. "Yes, your breviaries," and the white-haired Abbot looked silently but sternly at the brothers. They searched and searched. Gradually the frown disappeared from the Abbot's face, and a smile gradually spread over his withered features. "Well, never mind, let us drink," said he.

The Office of Lauds now consists of four Psalms and a canticle, followed by a little chapter, a hymn, versicle, antiphon, of Benedictus, the canticle, Benedictus and prayer. One of the characteristics of Lauds is the canticle taken from the Old Testament. Fourteen canticles taken from the Old Testament now find a place in our Breviaries.

The cause of this domiciliary visit was an anonymous communication received by the Minister of Police, stating that libels against the Imperial family, bound in the form of Prayer-books, had been placed there. No such libels were, however, found; but of one hundred and sixty pretended breviaries, twenty-eight were volumes of novels, sixteen were poems, and eleven were indecent books.

Quignonez's book was reproduced with the variations of the four earliest editions, by the Cambridge University Press in 1888. It is an interesting study in itself and in comparison with later breviaries. But it was felt by scholars that Quignonez's reforms were too drastic. Tradition was ignored.

It withdraws all privileges in respect to other breviaries. 6. Even bishops are forbidden to make the smallest change in the new Breviary. 8. The recitation of offices from other breviaries does not fulfil the obligation of those bound to breviary recitation. 9. Bishops are requested to introduce the new Breviary. 10.

The foundation of the fortunes of the house was undoubtedly its monopoly analogous to that enjoyed by the English house of Spottiswoode, and by the two elder Universities of printing the liturgical works Missals, Antiphons, Psalters, Breviaries, etc. that were used throughout the Spanish dominions.
