For many people a loaded bowel acts as a mood depressant, as illustrated by the Voltaire story. For others it destroys the appetite and brings about an uneasiness that affects the efficiency. Whether there is a poisoning of the organism, an autointoxication, in such a condition is not a settled matter.
From The Hygienic Dictionary Autointoxication. the accumulations on the bowel wall become a breeding ground for unhealthy bacterial life forms. The heavy mucus coating in the colon thickens and becomes a host for putrefaction. The blood capillaries to the colon begin to pick up the toxins, poisons and noxious debris as it seeps through the bowel wall.
Claudication also may result from the impaired circulation. The emotions may cause an inhibition of the digestive secretions and of intestinal peristalsis. This means that the digestive processes are arrested, that putrefaction and autointoxication will result, and that still further strain will thus be put upon the organs of elimination.
On the hypothesis that it is good for the individual who is acutely stricken by a disease or who is poisoned by autointoxication to rest and fast, and that the muscular system obeys the imperial command of pain, and in view of the fact that the brain is not only in constant touch with the conditions of every part of the body but that it is also the controlling organ of the body, one would expect that in these diseases the major pain whose purpose it is to govern general muscular action would be located in the head and there we find it.
"I wonder if he's right about it all," said Isabelle; "if we are just machines, with a need to be oiled now and then, to take this drug or that? Is it all as simple as he makes out? All just autointoxication, chemistry, and delusion?" "You're ill, that's why you doubt," Conny replied with tranquil positiveness.
They generally proceed harmoniously, but if they do not there results an autointoxication of the mother which is called a toxemia. Such toxemias, with extremely rare exceptions, do not occur in the early months, but are associated with the period of the active growth of the fetus, namely, the second half of pregnancy.
It is also necessary, however, that she should become acquainted with the symptoms which give warning that the excretory organs are acting imperfectly. Autointoxication can almost always be prevented.
"Perhaps you are!" "Perhaps. But I haven't discovered that secret, yet." "Dr. Potts says it's all the chemistry inside us autointoxication, poison!" "Yes, that is the latest theory." "It seems reasonable; but why didn't our grandmothers get poisoned?" "Perhaps they did, but they didn't know what to call it." "You think that is so, that we are poor little chemical retorts? It sounds horrid."
Therefore this small bulk of material, together with certain excretions from the liver and other organs, would be retained in the bowel and undergo fermentation there. Injurious substances which result from the fermentation would be absorbed, causing what is known as autointoxication, complicated with constipation.
All tissues and organs of the body are now taking on toxic substances. Here is the beginning of true autointoxication on a physiological level. Bernard Jensen, Tissue Cleansing Through Bowel Management. All maladies are due to the lack of certain food principles, such as mineral salts or vitamins, or to the absence of the normal defenses of the body, such as the natural protective flora.
