Sulphide of ammonium gives sulpho-cyanide of ammonium. This develops a blood-red colour with perchloride of iron, bleached by corrosive sublimate. Root and leaves. Poisonous property depends upon an alkaloid, aconitine. Aconite is one of the constituents of St. Jacob's Oil. Symptoms.
It is the pure alkaloid, or rather one of them, that we have to deal with here veratrine. "There are various sources of veratrine. For instance, there is the veratrine that may be derived from the sabadilla seeds which grow in the West Indies and Mexico. It is used, I am informed, by the Germans in their lachrymatory and asphyxiating bombs."
"In fact, there would have been no value in it, otherwise, for the experts for the people seem to have established the presence of conine in the body with absolute certainty." He paused and we waited expectantly. "I have had the body exhumed and have repeated the tests. The alkaloid which I discovered had given precisely the same results as in their tests." My heart sank.
More thoroughly studied some time after by Geiger and Hesse, who confirmed Mein's results. Liebig next published an analysis of the alkaloid, which was afterward shown to be incorrect.
With arecalin, the alkaloid of the Betel nut, I have no experience, nor have I used its mixture with eserin, recommended by Merck as more potent than either of the drugs in separate solution.
My friend usually kept the simple alkaloid in a paper, and dissolved it as he needed it in clear water, sometimes substituting an equivalent of "Magendie's Solution," which contains sixteen grains of the salt diffused through an ounce of water by the addition of a few drops of sulphuric acid.
In its action on the animal system it is one of the most virulent poisons known. It exists in varying, though small proportion, in all species of tobacco. Those called mild, and most esteemed, seem to contain the least. Thus, according to Orfila, Havana tobacco yields two per cent of the alkaloid, and Virginia nearly seven per cent.
It is their magnificent opaque white granulations which, seen through the transparent skin, form the snow-white stripes in the live Spider. Treated with nitric acid on the microscopic slide, they do not dissolve nor produce effervescence. Uric acid then is not present in this case; and the substance must be guanine, an alkaloid known to be the urinary product of the Spiders.
When boiled with baryta water, sinapine decomposes into sinapic acid, C H O , and choline, C H NO , the latter a well-known constituent of the bile, and produced also in the decomposition of the lecithin of the brain and yolk of egg. Cocaine, the alkaloid of coca leaves, is decomposed by heating with hydrochloric acid into methyl alcohol, benzoic acid, and a crystalline base, ecgonine, C H NO .
Not much can be inferred from a single case of this kind, but it is possible that the kombi may turn out a valuable remedy; and as Professor Sharpey has conducted a series of experiments with this substance, we look with interest for the results. An alkaloid has been obtained from it similar to strychnine.
