By Magna Carta John bound himself to make restitution for some of the spoliations he had committed upon individuals "without the legal judgment of their peers." See Magna Carta of John, ch. 60, 61, 65 and 66. One of the great charges, on account of which the nation rose against John, was, that he plundered individuals of their property, "without legal judgment of their peers."

Adequate resources were procured to enable the royal armies to hold the field, and a politic negotiation with the foreign merchants resulted in a carta mercatoria by which additional customs were imposed upon English exports.

At last the imperial household issued a proclamation containing Nineteen Articles a veritable magna carta but it was too late. The constitutional government which was about to be formed was thus laid aside. What the imperial family did was the mere organization of an advisory council.

PROBABLY no political compact between king and people was ever entered into in a manner to settle more authoritatively the fundamental law of a nation, than was Magna Carta. Probably no people were ever more united and resolute in demanding from their king a definite and unambiguous acknowledgment of their rights and liberties, than were the English at that time.

His father slowly scanned him with his inscrutable gaze, but answered nothing, and they passed under the magnificent Porta della Carta quite silently. Under the deep shadow of the gateway the business of the Ducal Palace was already progressing.

The principle of this chapter of Magna Carta, as applicable to the governments of the United States of America, forbids that any officer appointed either by the executive or legislative power, or dependent upon them for their salaries, or responsible to them by impeachment, should preside over a jury in criminal trials.

Francesco Foscari, whom we know so well by reason of his position in the relief on the Piazzetta façade of the Doges' Palace, and again on the Porta della Carta, was unique among the Doges both in the beginning and end of his reign.

Nothing in France was left to John except A-qui-taine', which had come to him through his mother. John's government was unjust and tyrannical, and the bishops and barons determined to preserve their rights and the rights of the people. Magna Carta is the most valuable charter ever granted by any sovereign to his people.

It would appear, from the following authorities, that since Magna Carta the form of the coronation oath has been "to maintain the law of the land," meaning that law as embodied in Magna Carta.

If it meant anything more, it was probably contrary to the common law, and therefore void. Since Magna Carta, we have evidence showing quite conclusively that all freemen, above the age of twenty-one years, were eligible as jurors. To women it is forbidden by law that they be judges; and thence it is, that feme coverts are exempted to do suit in inferior courts.
