The bishop who authenticated the miracle was no less a person than Fray Juan de Zumarraga, whose name is well known in Mexican history, for it was he who collected together all the Aztec picture-writings that he could find, "quite a mountain of them," say the chroniclers, and made a solemn bonfire of them in the great square of Tlatelolco.

Yes, there were three horsemen on this side of Zumarraga and coming at a trot. One of them wore a red coat. "Be careful, then, how you pick them off. The man in red must not be hurt; the money depends on that." They nodded. Night was now falling fast, yet not so fast but that as the horsemen came up I could distinguish Captain Alan.

The letter was without date, but, being addressed to the Bishop Zumárraga, the phrase that occurred in it "this New Spain, wherein, Very Reverend Father, you have labored in God's service this year and more past" showed that 1530 was the year in which it was written. As to place, there practically was no clew at all.

She reproached him with the slowness of the Indians in embracing the new religion, and at the same time she announced to him the important fact that she was to be the patron of the Indians, and also charged him to go and report the same to Zumarraga, who then enjoyed the lucrative office of Bishop of Mexico.

But as I pried into the case more closely, I found, within a double fold of the parchment yet not as though intentionally hidden, but rather as though there placed for temporary safety a sealed letter directed to the blessed Fray Juan de Zumárraga, who was of our Order, and who, as you know, was the first bishop of our holy Church in this New Spain.

Some were burnt or destroyed during the sieges of the cities, some perished by mere neglect, but the great mass was destroyed by archbishop Zumarraga, when he made an attempt and, to some extent, a successful one to obliterate every trace of heathenism, by destroying all the monuments and records in the country.

Besides the many smaller bonfires of this fanaticism, there is record of a great conflagration, under the auspices of Bishop Zumarraga, in which a vast collection of these old writings was consumed.
