In our break, instead of the Weiners, there were three students from Munich, they were awfully nice, and we sang all the songs we knew; especially "Hoch vom Dachstein, wo der Aar nur haust," and "Forelle" and "Wo mein Schatz ist," were lovely, and the people in two different breaks sang together. And then some of them sang some Alpine songs and yodelled till the hills echoed.
Samuel Williams, waxen clean and in sweet raiment, made his reappearance in Penrod's yard, yodelling a code-signal to summon forth his friend. He yodelled loud, long, and frequently, finally securing a faint response from the upper air. "Where are you?" shouted Mr. Williams, his roving glance searching ambient heights.
"Give him some more," said Merle. "It'll do him good to work for a change." "Merle, you really are too bad!" "Here you are," said the girl, and slid the handle of a basket into his other hand. Then they set out down the hill. Merle sang and yodelled as they went; then Peer sang, and then they all three sang together.
If Plettau, like Janus, had had eyes in the back of his head, down below in the parade-ground he would have seen an array of wide-open eyes and gaping mouths. After a short interval he arose, picked up a big piece of white cardboard from the ground, and pointed to it as he brandished it in the air. Then he laid it down again, and once more he yodelled gaily: "Holdrio yoho yoho hoho o o!"

Penrod yodelled a response; and Mr. Samuel Williams appeared, a large bundle under his arm. "Yay, Penrod!" was his greeting, casual enough from without; but, having entered, he stopped short and emitted a prodigious whistle.
