We stayed there three weeks longer, and the grass being good, by that time the stock was looking well. All this time we were expecting a Mormon train on the other side would cross over and break the road as they were not loaded, but not seeing any sign of them, the wagon-boss got tired of waiting, and hitching up, pulled about twenty miles to the edge of the snow.
So that was decided, and there was much whispering among groups when they thought the wagon-boss was near, and much unobtrusive preparation. It happened that the wagons pulled in close to the ranch the day before the Fourth, intending to lay over for a day or so. We were mighty glad of it, and hurried through our work.
"Well, same here," he retorted laconically; and that ended our conversation, though we rode stirrup to stirrup for eight miles. I can't say that, after the first shock of surprise, I gave much time to wondering what brought Frosty home. I took it he had had a row with the wagon-boss. Frosty is an independent sort and won't stand a word from anybody, and the wagon-boss is something of a bully.
