"Your notion of peace is only utopian, anyway, as long as you never, any day, stopped the war by yourself!" They point to the battlefield and its wreckage: "And you say that War won't be forever? Look, driveler!" The circle of the setting sun is crimsoning the mingled horizon of humanity: "You say that the sun is bigger than the earth? Look, imbecile!"
They dined, talked, posed as lions or as martyrs, and calmly bided their time. The persecution of the Encyclopedists availed little more than satire had done, in stemming the slowly rising tide of public opinion. Utopian theories took form in the ultra circles, were insidiously disseminated in the moderate ones, and were lightly discussed in the fashionable ones.
It has been said, that it is based upon too favorable an estimate of human character, and that he obtained it from the French philosophers. It seems to us that the reproach of Utopian opinions may more justly be thrown upon his opponents. The latter do not escape the evil from which they fly.
Holding out no utopian inducements to catch the unwary, and making no wheedling promises to blind the guileless, it states its great objects with all their great advantages, without at the same time suppressing its enormous and perhaps insuperable difficulties.
For there is no opinion from which I should so hardly be driven, and so reluctantly part, as the belief that the world will continue to improve, even as it has hitherto continually been improving; and that the progress of knowledge and the diffusion of Christianity will bring about at last, when men become Christians in reality as well as in name, something like that Utopian state of which philosophers have loved to dream like that millennium in which saints as well as enthusiasts have trusted.
With that I lead the way round the edge of the Lake of Lucendro towards our Utopian world. Down the mountain we shall go and down the passes, and as the valleys open the world will open, Utopia, where men and women are happy and laws are wise, and where all that is tangled and confused in human affairs has been unravelled and made right. Concerning Freedoms Section 1
These may be double railways or monorails or what not we are no engineers to judge between such devices but by means of them the Utopian will travel about the earth from one chief point to another at a speed of two or three hundred miles or more an hour.
The normal Irish man of letters begins as something of a Utopian. Kettle was always too much of a pessimist he himself would have said a realist to yield easily to romance. As a very young man he edited in Dublin a paper called The Nationist, for which he claimed, above all things, that it stood for "realism" in politics.
This, coupled with a cock-and-bull story of an instantaneous transfer from some planet unknown to Utopian astronomy. That he and all his world exists only upon a hypothesis that would explain everyone of these difficulties absolutely, is scarcely likely to occur to his obviously unphilosophic mind.
