To-day a doll funeral was in progress, and Nell, moving comfortably about inside the coop, arranged the broken bits of china in a spool-box, tied a sweeping piece of crape on her biggest doll, and allowed her imagination full swing in depicting the grief of the doll family. 'Mazin' Grace, sitting under the apple-tree outside, took little interest in the proceedings.
It'd fell out o' the nest; hardly covered with feathers, it was. I picked it up an' carried it to my room in my apron. Poor little mite how it fluttered an' struggled! I kep' it overnight in my spool-box. In the mornin' I fed it; by noon the sun come out, an' I let it out on the window-sill, where I keep my house plants; just a bit o' musk the cap'n liked musk an' a pot o' bergamot.
She might put down the needles and lace into the spool-box long enough to open oysters, or wrap up fruit and candy, or count out wood and coal into infinitesimal portions, or do her housework; but the knitting was snatched with avidity at the first spare moment, and the worn, white, blue-marked fingers, half enclosed in kid-glove stalls for protection, would writhe and twist in and out again.
They were absorbed in trying to hitch the duck to a spool-box, and paid little attention to her. "Tommy," she said, clutching his arm, "don't you want to go back?" But Tommy had tasted freedom; he had had one blissful day unwashed, uncombed, and uncorrected. "No," he declared stoutly; "I'm doin' to stay to this house and play wiv You're-a-peanut."
