Over in Montgomery the slave-drivers proceed with the terrible, unrelenting, fearless earnestness of the most unflinching criminals. After all, these crowds of office-hunters are far from representing the best element of the genuine, laborious, intelligent people, of its true healthy stamina. This is consoling for me, who know the American people in the background of office-hunters.

They may have suggested my acting as Turkish translator for reasons of their own reasons which I cannot fathom, but which need not therefore be bad ones. Chagrined office-hunters like myself are prone to be bitter. In an emergency of this magnitude a citizen should hesitate before he finds fault with the wisdom of those whom the nation has chosen to steer it through troubled waters. No carping!

He went to Albany, however, and in a lively letter he paints a familiar picture of the crowd of office-hunters who, he says, "like a cloud of locusts, have descended upon the city to devour every plant and herb and every green thing."

Lately, when an orator had strongly expressed himself against the maxim of patriotic office-hunters, "To the victor belong the spoils," he was very logically asked, "And pray, Sir, to whom should the spoils belong, if not to the victor?" So we would ask, should any one complain of girls being thus economized by men, "Who, in the name of common sense, should, if not men?

The sick man shook his head drearily, and put the implied compliment aside: he was past such vanities then. "You're wrong," he said. "It isn't Oregon, or Mexico, or Texas, but the office-hunters that have brought me where I am." In that answer there was the simple solemnity, that attaches to the lightest words of the dying.

For four years, the Democratic office-hunters had not tasted of the loaves and fishes within the gift of the executive. They expected liberality in conduct, if not liberalism in creed, from their next President. Douglas shared this political hunger.
