I heard the greetings of old friends, and their minute details of neighborhood affairs, their delightful jokes and Munchausen-like reports of tracts of timber-pines ever so many feet through at the butt.
Personally I could relate some which, although literally true, are so grossly improbable that I candidly confess I would not believe them myself had I not seen them happen. I will give a specimen of these Munchausen-like anecdotes, just to show the reader how well-advised I have been in suppressing the series.
"Say, this is rather interesting, Professor," he remarked. "Really?" the latter replied tartly. "You must forgive me if I cannot follow the complications of your pardon me for saying Munchausen-like affairs. How does the arrest of these two men help you?" "Don't you see?" Quest explained. "These are the two thugs who set upon me up at the section house.
Some yarns of an exceedingly tough and Munchausen-like character have been spun and printed by men of their adventures in Australian waters or the South Seas, but an examination of such stories by any one with personal knowledge of the Pacific and Australasia has soon, and very deservedly so, knocked the bottom out of a considerable number of them.
They had barely reached the Statue of Liberty when the "pirate" launched forth on one of his Munchausen-like tales of the sea. Highly colored, picturesque, untrue and absurd as a stained glass window, nevertheless these yams took on a semblance of reality from the character of the narrator himself. In all his stories the "pirate" was the hero.
