Simple familiar facts, with obvious little morals, are the right food for it, and constant repetition of what it knows is safe; but such heavy things as theories, opinions, and arguments must be kept carefully concealed from it, for fear of causing congestion or paralysis, or, worse still, that parlous condition which betrays itself in distressing symptoms such as one sees daily in society, or sits and shudders at in one's own friends, when the victim, swelling with importance, makes confident mis-statements, draws erroneous conclusions, sums up and gives advice so fatuous that you blush to be a biped of the same species.

If, instead of submitting to your unkindness, or bearing your mistake with the meekness of Hannah, you have been loudly denounced if you have been represented as a calumniator, and railing has been rendered for railing if the injured person have even taken advantage of your error to reproach you in turn, and circulated a thousand mis-statements to your disadvantage, you are still under the greatest obligations to correct and apologize for your original error.
Some of his exaggerations and mis-statements have been noticed in the course of the narrative. See also the last sentence of v. 17, and indeed passim.
In a pamphlet in which plain printed words cannot be left alone, it is not surprising if there are mis-statements upon larger matters.
Of course, I need hardly say that in Rome they promised to do everything for me; but you can't trust them when your back is turned, and I need hardly add that the Bishop was pulling strings all the time. They showed me one of his letters, which was a tissue of mis-statements a regular tissue. Now, suppose you had a son and you wanted him to be a priest?
