The melody was as instinctive as the mating-call of a thrush, as crystalline as a mountain stream, and as pure as the snow from whence the stream had come. Evelina climbed to meet him, her face and heart uplifted. The silvery notes dropped about her like rain as she ascended, strangely glad and strangely at peace.

Then the first opened up with a choking whine that lifted steadily into an ecstatic mating-call, and Pat saw a black something, blacker even than the night, leap against the far, faint skyline, dangle seemingly a trembling moment, then flash from view across the desert.

The air seemed to be blown violently through the nostrils, though sounding as if driven through the teeth a shrilling hiss, fine and piercing, which one not so much hears as feels, crisping cold along his nerves. It may seem strange, but I believe this whistle is a mating-call. If only the Sphinx had not possessed a heart of stone!

The drum-call is made by the male bird who, beating the air with his wings, produces the sound. It is said to be a mating-call, but is heard at other times as well, long after the mating-season is over. =Stalking the Ruffed Grouse= If you want to see the birds, stalk them when you hear their call. Wait until you locate the direction of the sound, then walk silently and follow it.
