It was, therefore, no surprise when in the morning of April 29, 1916, a wireless report was received from him reading as follows: "Have destroyed my guns, and most of my munitions are being destroyed; and officers have gone to Khalil, who is at Madug, to say am ready to surrender. I must have some food here, and cannot hold on any more.

Khalil has been told to-day, and a deputation of officers has gone on a launch to bring some food from Julnar." A few hours afterward another message, the last one to come through, reached the relief forces, announcing the actual surrender: "I have hoisted the white flag over Kut fort and towns, and the guards will be taken over by a Turkish regiment, which is approaching.

Khalil, the son of Kilawun, who succeeded him, with the title of El-Malik el-Ashraf, was able to begin operations in the spring of 1291 against Acre, and on the 18th of May, after an obstinate resistance, the town was taken by storm. Those who could not escape by water were either cut down or taken prisoner; the town was plundered, then burnt, and the fortifications razed to the ground.

We distributed ourselves round this rock as well as we could, in order to repose; Khalil Aga and myself making a covering from the sun by means of my carpet, propped up by our fusees and fastened by the corners to stones we placed upon the rock, by means of our shawls and sashes.

At the moment of Iskender's entrance, a man named Khalîl was gravely playing English music-hall airs on a concertina, having acquired the art by instruction from an English sailor at Port Said. Iskender advanced self-consciously, knowing himself the hero of the hour. And in the twinkling of an eye the music ceased; he was surrounded.
