There is an old, fat portrait of Gervoyse Holles, in a buff-coat, a coarse, hoggish, yet manly man. The painter is unknown; but I honor him, and Gervoyse Holles too, for one was willing to be truly rendered, and the other dared to do it.
The streets leading from the Square are all of about the same date, and were built or laid out in the eighteenth century. At No. 24, Holles Street Lord Byron was born. Chandos House in Chandos Street was a part of the original house designed by the Duke of Chandos.
In the existing temper of the Houses such a ministry could only be found in the men who had brought about Danby's fall. Shaftesbury became President of the Council. Shortly after, being pressed by his creditors, the father abandoned both, and leaving them with a pittance of 150 l a year, fled to Valenciennes, where he died, in August, 1791. Soon after the birth of her son, Mrs. Byron took him to Scotland.
