When North Carolina celebrated its centenary, the Marine Band was ordered to Fayetteville to participate in the ceremonies. The little Southern town was much interested in the advent of the "President's Band," and the prevailing opinion was that "Dixie" would be tabooed music with us.
Curtis followed with forced marches, his advance skirmishing every day with Price's rear-guard. In Arkansas, Price was joined by McCulloch and they retired to Boston Mountains. Curtis advanced as far as Fayetteville and then fell back to await attack on ground of his own choice.

Splendid collections were also received from F. E. Dawley, of Fayetteville, consisting of eleven varieties; S. D. Willard, of Geneva, twenty-three varieties; New York Agricultural Experiment Station, at Geneva, one hundred and five varieties.
