Few were the words that had passed between them during all those weary miles. An occasional oath, muffled but impressive, fell from the lips of one or the other of those who followed close behind the silent, imperturbable leader. The tall man was as silent as the unspeakable night itself. It was impossible to distinguish the faces of these dogged night- farers.
Alexander rode across the moors to the glen head. Two or three solitary farers that he met gave him eager good day. "Are ye getting sae weel, laird? I am glad o' that!" "Good day, Mr. Jardine! I rejoice to see you recovered. Well, they hung more of them yesterday!" "Gude day, Glenfernie! It's a bonny morn, and sweet to be living!" At noon he looked down on the Kelpie's Pool.
As our alcove was separated from the fire by a jutting pillar of rock, no direct light from the fire fell on its opening; it and we were well in the shadow. So shadowed we could hunch ourselves forward as far as we dared and peer down into the cave. Its floor was littered with wallets, blankets, staffs and other foot- farers' gear.
And the first day was like unto the second and the third, for these two desert farers went but slowly.
They were great Christmas farers at Wellses'. With no children of their own, the sweet holiday season would have lost its sweetest charm but that Jenny was again with them. They rigged up a lovely Christmas-tree for Mart's babies, and summoned in sundry little waifs from the neighborhood, and had games and romps and laughter and merry voices.
