MacAndrew finds them plentifully in Vigo Bay, and J. Miller in the Adriatic, off Trieste. But what is it like? Conceive a very fat short earth-worm; not ringed, though, like the earth-worm, but smooth and glossy, dappled with darker spots, especially on one side, which may be the upper one.

The many arguments for and against accepting the credentials of this unaristocratic ancestor cannot be dwelt upon here. But it may be consolatory, in view of the very plebeian character of the earth-worm, to know that various of the annelids of the sea have a much more aristocratic bearing.

You may see, it is true, an earth-worm in a robin's beak, and may hear a thrush breaking a snail's shell; but these little things are, as it were, passed by with a kind of twinkle for apology, as by a well-bred man who does openly some little solecism which is too slight for direct mention, and which a meaner man might hide or avoid.

Whatever life there is must hibernate through that, and rise again each day." He mused. "One can imagine something worm-like," he said, "taking its air solid as an earth-worm swallows earth, or thick-skinned monsters " "By the bye," I said, "why didn't we bring a gun?" He did not answer that question. "No," he concluded, "we just have to go. We shall see when we get there."

This silk, as he explained it to me, was a fabric composed of the entrails of a species of earth-worm. The worm was carefully fed on mulberries kind of fruit resembling a water-melon and, when sufficiently fat, was crushed in a mill. The paste thus arising was called papyrus in its primary state, and went through a variety of processes until it finally became "silk."

In some legends the Trolls are represented as an ancient race of beings now superseded by the human race. "'What sort of an earth-worm is this? said one Giant to another, when they met a man as they walked. 'These are the earth-worms that will one day eat us up, brother, answered the other; and soon both Giants left that part of Germany."

And then, through ashes and cinders, the melted lava burrows out, twisting and twirling like an enormous fiery earth-worm, till it gets to the air outside, and runs off down the mountain in a stream of fire. And what is lava? That, I think, I must tell you another time.

And such a crushed earth-worm this miserable, infatuated people call the vicegerent of God, before whom they bow in the dust! Ah, foolish children, are you not yourselves disgusted with your masquerade, and do you not blush for this jest?"

"There is peace in the wood; it is delightful to blossom, to shed refreshing perfume around, to live amidst the songs of birds and the rustling of trees; but the sun's rays will outlive us all." "What is the first prize?" asked the earth-worm, who had overslept himself, and only now joined them. "It gives free entrance to the kitchen garden," said the mule.

"Footless, yellow earth-worm," said Bagheera under his whiskers, as though he were trying to remember something. "Sssss! Have they ever called me that?" said Kaa. "Something of that kind it was that they shouted to us last moon, but we never noticed them.
