Only once during his lifetime does Williams recall tasting whisky, when his cousin bought a pint. It cost three cents in those days. He said his mother used to make beer out of persimmons and cornhusks, but they don't make it any more, so he doesn't even drink beer now. He would much rather have a good cigar. He has since a boy, smoked a pipe.

After we have partaken of goat stew and bread a course of dumplings, melons, and peaches is served, and this finishes the feast. What seem to be dumplings are composed of a kind of hash of bread and meat, tied up in little balls with cornhusks and served boiling hot. They are eaten with much gusto by the party and highly praised.

I always felt like a robber or a Standard Oil director every time I looked at the books. The most of 'em was rich folks self-made men, just like Peter prophesied and they brought their wives and daughters and slept on cornhusks and eat chowder and said 'twas great and just like old times.

The spattered beer seemed to intensify the stench of the refuse on which they sat; a carpet of orange and banana peels, fleshlike slices of watermelon, moldy masses of mangoes and sugarcane, all mixed up with cornhusks from tamales and human offal. Demetrio's calloused hands shuffled through the brilliant coins, counting and counting.

Said 'twas for all the world like where he used to live when he was a boy. He liked the grub and he liked the cornhusks and he liked Brown. Brown had a way of stealing a thing and yet paying enough for it to square the law that hit Ebenezer where he lived. His daughter liked Brown, too, and 'twas easy enough to see that Brown liked her.

There are structures on the extreme northern and on the extreme southern ends, but a considerable part of the intermediate area was not occupied. Many of the walls in this portion are apparently underlaid by a foot or more of ashes, sheep dung, domestic refuse, cornhusks, etc.

The interior forms a convenient dry, airy space, and at the time it was visited the floor was covered with a litter of cornhusks. Almost directly opposite this ruin, on the other side of the canyon, are the remains of a village that might properly be called a cave village. At this point a large rock stands out from the cliff and in it there is a cavity shaped almost like a quarter sphere.
