Every portal to success in literature is guarded by those watch-dogs, the failures in literature. The editors, sub-editors, associate editors, most of them, and the manuscript-readers for the magazines and book-publishers, most of them, nearly all of them, are men who wanted to write and who have failed.
Hence from contemporary evidence does old New England life seem all winter, all bitter cold and fierce rains and harsh winds; yet there were surely some warm summer days and cheerful sunshine, so smoothly serene as to gain no record. The relations between book-publishers and authors, between book-publishers and the public, were from earliest days most friendly.
At about the time when some of the most prominent courtiers Edward Dyer, Gilbert Talbot, the Earl of Hertford, and more especially Sir Christopher Hatton and Sir Philip Sidney had just returned from abroad, book-publishers thought it worth while to print books addressed to travellers.
I'd quit and free-lance if I could break in with fiction, but a rotten bunch of log-rollers have got the inside track with all the magazines and book-publishers." "Ever try to write any fiction?" Una once heard S. Herbert retort. "No, but Lord! any fool could write better stuff than they publish. It's all a freeze-out game; editors just accept stuff by their friends."
