At Barbizon there was no master, no pontiff in the arts.
Pierre Nolasque and St. Raymond de Peñafort. Four portraits, 1704-1705B, by the facile and popular Madrid artist Goya, should by no means be passed without notice. There follows next a small collection of English paintings, rather indifferent in quality, but historically of much interest, by reason of the inspiration drawn from Constable and Bonington by the Barbizon school.
He said that young Rousseau preferred to paint under an assumed name in truth, it was his maternal grandmother's name rather than to have his canvases confused with those of the academic, old-school Barbizon painter. He was above trading on a name that was fast becoming obsolete! Then there came the astonishing disappearance of young Frederick.
Even in his sick, stunned state of the evening before, when he was at last staggering on again, after his fall, to the Fontainebleau station, he had remembered to stop a Barbizon man whom he came across and give him a pencilled message for the deserted madame. He had sent her the Tue Chantal address, there would be a letter from her this morning.
He will realize that it is not a trick, not a habit, not a trade this modernity and that with fashions it has nothing to do; that it is explicitly a part of our modern urge toward expression quite as much as the art of Corot and Millet were of Barbizon, as the art of Titian, Giorgione and Michelangelo were of Italy; that he and his time bear the strictest relationship to one another and that through this relationship he can best build up his own original power.
Corot, eighteen years the senior of Millet, was the first to welcome the whipped-out artist to Barbizon.
Miss Van Tuyn wondered again whether he had ever heard of Leonardo. Garstin mentioned some Paris painters of the past, but of more recent times than those of the grand old Italians, spoke of Courbet, of Manet, of Renoir, Guilaumin, Sisley, the Barbizon school, Cezanne and his followers.
Those Barbizon chaps, artists that they were, used to laugh at Corot and tell him he was parodying nature, but he went right on painting the foliage of his trees silver-gray until, finally, the other artists discovered that he was the only one who was telling the truth on canvas.
But Soames gave them no help, sitting with his knees crossed, talking of the Barbizon school of painters, whom he had just discovered.
'If I could only believe you, said Morton, holding her arms in his hands and looking into her brown eyes. 'Why don't you believe me? she said; but there was no longer any earnestness in her voice. It had again become a demure insincerity. 'If you were really fond of me, you'd give yourself. 'Perhaps I will one of these days. 'When... when you return to Barbizon? 'I won't promise.
