In the north transept are remains of the dormitory stairs, and on this side the cloisters, too, were situated. The aumbry, parlor, sacristy, chapterhouse, slype to the infirmary, day-stairs to dormitory and undercroft were on the east side of the cloisters; the postern and river gate, over which was the abbot's lodge on the north side, and also the buttery, refectory, and kitchen.

This chapel has been so completely restored that it has a thoroughly neat and modern appearance, and has lost all its archæological value; round it runs a Norman arcade, and on the north side an aumbry may be seen. The north transept retains its Norman arcading, which, fortunately, has not been touched by the restorer's hand; how long it may escape is doubtful, as it is much mutilated.

Its church has unusually prominent buttresses to the tower, and preserves remains of stoup in S. porch; piscinas in S. nave wall and chancel; aumbry; poppy heads to seats. The churchyard contains some old stocks. Loxton, a village 3 m. S.W. of Sandford Station, facing Crook's Peak. It has an interesting church, which is not easily observed from the road, as it is reached by a lane.

The interior is not particularly interesting, but note panelled arch on N. of sanctuary, aumbry in N. aisle, square font. The pulpit has been constructed out of two old pews. Near the church is an old cylindrical "lock-up." Puckington, a small village 3 m. N.E. of Ilminster. There is also a Norm, font with cable moulding. Puriton, a parish 3-3/4 m. N.N.E. from Bridgwater, 3/4 m. from Dunball.

The church, rebuilt 1860, is without interest, except for a very curious font of uncertain date, standing on a modern pedestal. Barrow, South, is a village 1 m. N. from Sparkford. The church, a small aisleless building, contains ancient bench ends; piscina and aumbry in sanctuary; brass to R. Morris on floor of nave. A fragment of Norman work will be noticed over the N. door.

In the first named of these there may still be seen, in the jambs, the capitals, and the arch-moulds of the north-western window, some of the colour decoration of which so much remained until the nineteenth century. The space in the north wall shows where the aumbry used to be.

In that transept the old wooden roof still remains. The nave is Perpendicular, solid and plain; the roof quite modern, though the corbels that supported the old one, carved with representations of angels singing and playing, were not disturbed. The sedilia in the chancel and the aumbry in the north transept should be seen.

On the south is the priest-vicars' vestry , and at the east end the #chapel of S. Mary Magdalen#. This chapel was restored by Messrs. G.F. Bodley, A.R.A., and T. Garner, architects, in memory of the Rev. T.F. Crosse, who was precentor and canon of the cathedral. The aumbry in the north wall was the receptacle in which S. Richard's head was preserved in a case of silver.

The chambers beneath this on the ground floor should be carefully inspected. In succession, from L. to R., are sacristy, lighted by a broken rose window and containing a painted piscina and aumbry; treasury; chapter-house, partly vaulted and entered from the quadrangle by a beautiful E.E. doorway; library and staircase to dormitory; a passage; entrance to monastic common room.

Opposite to the blocked window already mentioned, which has an aumbry east of it, there is a late square-headed window of two lights, whose arches do not reach quite up to the lintel, but are connected with it by short perpendiculars. East of this is a piscina with projecting semi-octagonal basin, trefoil head, and ogee hood, and with a small square window above and to the left of it.
