"They say he left a wife there." remarked the lady, innocently. "Ah!" said Sylvia. "Then he will not be staying long, presumably." There was a pause; all at once Mrs. Armistead's voice became gentle and sympathetic. "Sylvia," she said, "don't imagine that I fail to appreciate what is going on in your heart. I know a true romance when I see one.

"What in 'ell's the matter?" Ned groaned. "Don't worry, Sonny," an old corporal called, "you'll get there in time to see more than you want." The regiment reached the battle lines at one o'clock. The morning hours had been spent in driving in the skirmishers and feeling the enemy's positions. Lee had given orders for a general charge on a signal yell from Armistead's brigade.

He wrote to each of his division commanders ordering an assault, and directing, when they heard the yell of Armistead's troops, to charge also with yells. The yell was heard, and some of the divisions, but not all, pressed forward to a wild charge. The rebels came on heroically, but were sent reeling back down the slope in confusion and disorder.

And she gently but firmly took Mrs. Armistead's arm, and so they marched back into the drawing-room. Dolly and Emma had progressed to separate tables, it developed, so that the ordeal of Frank and Sylvia was over.
