In 1775 was printed in that town a didactic satire of some four hundred lines in the Popian couplet, entitled Inebriety. Coleridge's friend, who had to write a prize poem on the subject of Dr. Jenner, boldly opened with the invocation "Inoculation! Heavenly maid, descend."
The militia, still withdrawing before superior numbers, retreated across the river, and the British occupied the town. Before these ends were accomplished the colonies had revolted.
In 1775 there came another popular rising, in Honan that of the "Society of the White Lotus". Liu Sung was captured and was condemned to penal servitude. His followers, however, regrouped themselves, particularly in the province of Anhui.
