It was many minutes before I could get the dog away; and this incident, as well as the one already related, shows how slow the reptile is to make the fatal spring. I was much annoyed, and at the same time amused, with the Urubu vultures.
We had turned our backs upon the volcano of Orizava; on our right the black summits of the Cordillera stood out against the red sky; the urubu vultures were whirling round and round high up above us the only living creatures we had set eyes on since the evening before.
"They live in very good friendship," Le Vaillant says, "and in the same cave I sometimes found as many as three nests close together." The Urubu vultures of Brazil are as, or perhaps even more, sociable than rooks. The little Egyptian vultures live in close friendship.
