It was many minutes before I could get the dog away; and this incident, as well as the one already related, shows how slow the reptile is to make the fatal spring. I was much annoyed, and at the same time amused, with the Urubu vultures.

We had turned our backs upon the volcano of Orizava; on our right the black summits of the Cordillera stood out against the red sky; the urubu vultures were whirling round and round high up above us the only living creatures we had set eyes on since the evening before.

"They live in very good friendship," Le Vaillant says, "and in the same cave I sometimes found as many as three nests close together." The Urubu vultures of Brazil are as, or perhaps even more, sociable than rooks. The little Egyptian vultures live in close friendship.

They say that when the tzapatan begins to sing, all the birds in the forest repair to it, each one carrying a stick to add to the structure; only one, a tyrant-bird, brings two sticks, one for itself and one for the urubu or vulture, that bird being considered too large, heavy, and ignorant of architecture to assist personally in the work.

Urubu: the black vulture of South America. Suddenly a pigeon winged through the air, then another, and still another. They were leaving ... they were leaving!... A beating of wings, more on the way. They would never return, never! They were fleeing in horror, feeling the approach of death.

"And it is not long since it was done," said Pedro, "for the flesh at least what's left of it is still fresh." "Ugh, you brutes!" exclaimed Quashy, referring to a number of urubu vultures which stood on the shells, all more or less gorged, some still tearing sleepily at the meat, others standing in apoplectic apathy, quite unable to fly.
