But we make a great mistake if we merely think of Tennyson as a rich and ample nature moving serenely through life. He was "black-blooded," he once said, adding, "like all the Tennysons." Doubtless he had in his mind his father, a man often deeply in the grip of melancholy. And the absurd legend, invented probably by Rossetti, contains a truth in it and may be quoted here.

She bought it and the proprietor retired from the field. He said with cold dignity, that cook books were somewhat out of their line, but he would order it if she desired it. She said, no, never mind. Then she fell to conning the titles again, finding a delight in the inspection of the Hawthornes, the Longfellows, the Tennysons, and other favorites of her idle hours.

Which moral, so pointed, accounts assuredly for half our interest in the poetic character a sentiment more unlikely than not, I think, to survive a sustained succession of Victor Hugos and Rostands, or of Byrons, Tennysons and Swinburnes.

The verses are described as "partly in the old style," but the true old style of the Elizabethan and cavalier days is lost. In the summer of 1867 the Tennysons moved to a farmhouse near Haslemere, at that time not a centre of literary Londoners. "Sandy soil and heather-scented air" allured them, and the result was the purchase of land, and the building of Aldworth, Mr Knowles being the architect.

In February 1865 Tennyson lost the mother whose portrait he drew in Isabel, "a thing enskied and sainted." In the autumn of 1865 the Tennysons went on a Continental tour, and visited Waterloo, Weimar, and Dresden; in September they entertained Emma I., Queen of the Sandwich Islands. The months passed quietly at home or in town.

So the firmament was occupied by rather wandering stars: some of them elders already noticed, others born in the ten or twelve years between Keats and the eldest of the Tennysons . The chief of these were the pair of half-serious, half-humorous singers, Hood and Praed.
