It seems that in the earliest times Greek ships were only allowed to enter this mouth of the Nile in case of necessity.
And this opinion is confirmed by Dionysius and Strabo, who consider the Dodona oracle originally Pelasgic. Also Pelasgic, according to Strabo. The five zones accepted by Strabo are as follows: the uninhabitable torrid zone lying in the region of the equator; a zone on either side of this extending to the tropic; and then the temperate zones extending in either direction from the tropic to the arctic regions.
To the same Macedonian epoch we may perhaps ascribe the building or rather the rebuilding of Boeotian Thebes, which one who passes for a contemporary writer under the name of Dicaearchus, describes as 'recently divided up into straight streets'. To the same period Strabo definitely assigns the newer town of Smyrna, lying in the plain close to the harbour.
Strabo, too, believed that it might be possible to navigate on the same parallel of latitude, due west from the coast of Africa or Spain to that of India. The accounts given by Marco Polo and Sir John Maundeville of their explorations towards China confirmed the exaggerated idea of the extent of Eastern Asia.
So grave a historian as Strabo, as well as Ælian, refers to the story of the courtesan Rhodope whose sandal was carried off by an eagle and dropped in the King of Egypt's lap as he was administering justice, so that he could not rest until he had discovered to whom this delicately small sandal belonged, and finally made her his queen.

Even later Tacitus calls it a 'Greek city', and Greek was still used for official inscriptions there in the third century.
