All the imposing school houses which dot the length and breadth of our land public-schools, private-schools, boarding-schools are constructed and administered in accordance with modern principles. In them no effort is spared to educate and enlighten the youthful intellect. It is trained in scientific information, and scientific methods, and scientific habits of thought.

It was agreed that the balance should be paid after leaving school. In a class of ten I received a diploma from the normal department, June 17, 1886. My time during the summer was occupied in working with my father at the carpenter's trade. Texas was said to have good public-schools, and it was my plan to try the "Lone Star State."

We agreed that they were ideal training-grounds for character, and that our public-schools were the envy of the civilised world. In such profound and suggestive interchange of ideas the time sped rapidly away. Then we were gathered into a big hall.

For this was one of the forces which had had to do with the shaping of his thought. Beginning in the public-schools he had learned about his country the country which was his, if not Corydon's.

For the real differences of thought and feeling between you and your neighbour were there when you were children, and your agreements are the result of the subsequent community of interests which you have shared in similar public-schools, universities, services, or professions. Why should two children want to see the same pantomime?

Emigration has dug away the outside of the walls and revolution is digging away inside. For men like Belvoir, men who have been to public-schools and Oxford, and have a private income, it will be comfortable enough for a long time to come. But it is on the crumble. When I thought of my children I never pictured them grown up in that genteel snobbish life that I'd been brought up in. No!

They gathered a population of humble serfs, selected from twenty or thirty races of hereditary bondsmen; but owing to the absurd American custom of having public-schools, the children of this population learned to speak English, and even to read it. So they became too good for their lot in life; and then a wandering agitator would get in, and all of a sudden there would be hell.
