Some of the windows of both of these churches illustrate the frequent employment of slightly projecting brick arches and pilaster casings at the sides. The great Palladian chancel windows of Renaissance churches were often much larger. Usually they were stationary, especially the central section, although sometimes, as in Christ's Church, the two side windows had sliding sashes.

Compassion for all is the command of the Prophet...." Here the Arab was suddenly and roughly interrupted; Paula, who, till now, had been leaning against a pilaster, contemplating the hanging and silently listening to the conversation, hastily stepped nearer to the old man, and with flaming cheeks and flashing eyes pointed at him wrathfully, while she exclaimed in a trembling voice-heedless alike of the astonished and indignant bystanders, and of the little dog which flew at the Arab, barking furiously: "You you, the followers of the false prophet you, the companions of the bloodhound Khalid you and Charity!

This is of a type commonly found in Continental churches, the corbel with its conical sides harmonizing with the ten panels and base-mouldings of the box proper. It is fastened to the pilaster which supports the arch above. The original paint a little of it still remains. It appears to have been white on the panels, lined in red and blue.

It is a great pity that so little of this superb work is left, and that what there is should be so mutilated. I believe there were five entrances to this bath, two of which remain. It is 4ft. 3in. wide. Double doors and hinges have been inserted in this doorway, and the base and a portion of a pilaster cut away most barbarously to receive them.

Great armfuls of flowers hid the capitals of the pilasters, others their bases; garlands heavy, even corpulent garlands were looped from pilaster to pilaster; every vase was filled with flowers, the little vases on the brackets, the big ones alternating with the statues in the niches, the huge floor-vases in the corners: the table, the sofas, the floor, all were strewn with smaller blossoms, tiny flowers or fresh petals of roses.

The third example in another room at Upsala is virtually the same as the mantel just described, except for the greater elaboration of the pilasters, pilaster projections of the frieze and central panel.

Under the before-mentioned cornice which finishes the walls, and above the brackets where the lunettes rest, between pilaster and pilaster, sit twelve large figuresprophets and sybilsall truly wonderful, as much for their grace as for the decoration and design of their draperies.

In the pilaster projections of the frieze there are flush outline ornaments taking the form of a shield, while other graceful outline patterns running through the flutings adorn the upper half of the pilasters proper. The lower half is fluted in the short running bond sections.

I may also especially point out the bird feeding its three young ones on the seventh pillar on the Piazzetta side; but there is no end to the fantasy of these sculptures; and the traveller ought to observe them all carefully, until he comes to the great Pilaster or complicated pier which sustains the party wall of the Sala del Consiglio; that is to say, the forty-seventh capital of the whole series, counting from the pilaster of the Vine angle inclusive, as in the series of the lower arcade.
