Rations and the Battalion Transport. At La Lacque. The bombing of Aire. General Mackenzie obliged by his wound to leave the Division. Return of Colonel Wetherall. Tripp's Farm on fire. A mysterious epidemic. A period of wandering. The march from Pont Asquin to St. Hilaire. Nieppe Forest. Attack by A and B Companies on August 7. Headquarters gassed. A new Colonel. The Battalion goes a-reaping.
I was wondering how I could manage to transport my souvenirs home, as I had collected a pretty good supply by this time shell cases, fuse tops, clogs, and that Boche rifle I got on Christmas Day. I put it in all right and then sat down and hoped for the best. My spirits were now raised to such a pitch that I again decided to ride to Nieppe just for fun.
On 11 October Smith-Dorrien's 2nd Corps reached the La Bassée Canal between Aire and Béthune, while Gough's cavalry was clearing the German patrols out of the forest of Nieppe. On the 12th he attempted a frontal attack on La Bassée, but found the German position too strong, and determined to try to wheel round it on the north.
As soon as it was dark, the 19th Division took our place in the line, and we marched back for the night to the Rue des Chavattes, whence, after ridding ourselves of gum-boots, sheepskin coats, and extra blankets, we marched the following day by Locon, Lestrem and Merville to Caudescure, a little village on the edge of Nieppe Forest.
While the Battalion harvested the corn behind Nieppe Forest, on the other side of it hue and cry were being raised after the enemy, whose tail was well turned in his last retreat. The Lys salient, which had proved so useless to him, was being evacuated.
