An Episcopalian tells me it is only necessary to accept the Nicene and the Apostles' Creeds, and that even then one is at liberty to interpret them as he pleases; that this is what constitutes Orthodoxy and makes one evangelical. But this process of eliminating the hard doctrines has not gone on in any authoritative way on the part of the Church itself.

The bishops were not to obtain their confirmation at Rome, but, as already decreed by the Nicene Council, from a couple of neighbouring bishops or an archbishop. The German bishops were to be under their own primate, who might hold a general consistory with chancellors and counsellors, to receive appeals from the whole of Germany.

I. The symbolic books, received by ALL TRINITARIAN CHRISTIAN CHURCHES, are, The Symbol of the Apostles; and The Nicene Symbol. II. The symbolic books, received by the ROMAN CATHOLIC Church, are, The General Councils; Among these, the Council of Trent, as immediately applying to the controversies between the Catholic and Protestant Churches, is particularly regarded; The Symbol of Pope Pius IV.;

Each emperor adopted the religion of his capital; Valentinian held the Nicene faith, and Valens the Arian faith; and unhappy Egypt was the only part of the empire whose religion differed from that of its rulers.

In the West, Pope Adrian the First accepted and announced the decrees of the Nicene assembly, which is now revered by the Catholics as the seventh in rank of the general councils. Rome and Italy were docile to the voice of their father; but the greatest part of the Latin Christians were far behind in the race of superstition.

He won the friendship of his Egyptian subjects, as well as of their Saracen neighbours, all of whom, as far as they were Christian, held to the Nicene creed.

The Greeks indeed, who approved of the Nicene Council, oppressed and also punished them wherever they were able; but the Arians returned the like treatment, especially in Africa and Italy. Yet this prosperity of the Arians wholly terminated when, under the auspices of Justinian, the Vandals were driven from Africa and the Goths from Italy.

She liued 79 yeares, and then departed this life about the 21 yeare of hir sonnes reigne. And againe, the said Athanasius in an epistle which he writeth to the emperour Iouinianus reciteth, that the churches in Britaine did consent with the churches of other nations in the confession of faith articuled in the Nicene councell.

When the church had been cleared of all except the faithful, the second part of our mass, or the mass of the faithful, began with the Nicene symbol or creed.

At this council, before which Arius defended his views, over three hundred bishops were in attendance, and pronounced in favor of the orthodox doctrine that of the equality of the Son with the Father and condemned the Arians to exile and their books to be burned. This council also promulgated the Nicene Creed in its early form.
