The most conspicuous among them were Atteius, a friend of Sallust; Epirota, the correspondent of Cicero; Julius Hyginus, a friend of Ovid; and Nigidius Figulus, an orator as well as grammarian. M. Vitruvius Pollio, the celebrated architect, deserves to be mentioned for his treatise on architecture. He was probably native of Verona, and served under Julius Caesar in Africa, as a military engineer.
A few miles N. of Agrippa stands a small crater; at a point W. of which the Hyginus cleft originates. SILBERSCHLAG. A very brilliant crater, 8 or 9 miles in diameter, connected with the great mountain range just referred to. The Ariadaeus cleft cuts through the range a few miles N. of it. This neighbourhood at sunrise presents a grand spectacle.

The people saw in this omen, Laocoön's punishment for his impiety in having pierced with his spear, the wooden horse which was consecrated to Minerva. Thus Virgil relates the story in the Æneid; others, as Hyginus, give different accounts, though agreeing in the main points.
As it approaches Hyginus it becomes gradually coarser, and exhibits many expansions and contractions, the former in many cases evidently representing craters.
W. H. Pickering inclines to the belief that lunar volcanic action, once apparently so potent, is not yet wholly extinct. An instance of an opposite kind of change was alleged by Dr. Hermann J. Klein of Cologne in March, 1878. In Linné the obliteration of an old crater had been assumed; in "Hyginus N.," the formation of a new crater was asserted.
He had the charge of the Palatine library, but that did not prevent him from having many scholars; and he was one of the most intimate friends of the poet Ovid, and of Caius Licinius, the historian, a man of consular rank , who has related that Hyginus died very poor, and was supported by his liberality as long as he lived.
This mythology, which retained the name of Hyginus and the title of Genealogiae, came to be generally used in the schools of the grammarians. The demand for school-books was now rapidly increasing; and as the great classical authors published their works, an abundant supply of material was given to the ingenious and learned.
When observing the Hyginus cleft, Dr. Klein noticed that at one place the declivities of the interior displayed decided differences of tint. At many points the reflected sunlight was of a distinctly yellow hue, while in other places it was white, as if the cliffs were covered with snow.
I explained the Greek myth of Daphne as a survival from the savage mental habit of regarding men as on a level with stones, beasts, and plants; or as a tale 'moulded by poets on the same model. The latter is the more probable case, for we find Daphne late, in artificial or mythographic literature, in Ovid and Hyginus. In Ovid the river god, Pentheus, changes Daphne into a laurel.
