The trees which hung over the tranquil lake, the lovely walks where girls and boys alike could pace up and down, the tennis-courts, the hockey-field, the football-ground reserved for the boys, and the lacrosse-field designed for both girls and boys, gave promise of intense enjoyment; and when the guests sat down to lunch such a lunch as only Mrs Macintyre could prepare they felt that they were indeed happy in having secured such a home for the education and delight of their darlings.
Daisy maintained her resolution on the following day, and though she did not speak again of going downstairs, she insisted that Muriel should return to the hockey-field and resume her place in Olga's team. It was the last match of the season, and she would not hear of her missing it. "You and Blake are both to go," she said. "I won't have either of you staying at home for me."

After long hours of mental toil, after the physical strain of the hockey-field, a quiet hour is vouchsafed beside her own fireside, with the companionship of a beloved friend to soothe and cheer, and that hour, ladies that precious hour I say it with emotion almost too strong for words that stolen hour of peace and rest must needs be passed on the coal-box!
