In Lord Curzon's opinion, confirmed by Spiegel, Droysen and Schindler, the Sirdara Pass, some forty miles from Teheran on the way to Meshed, must have been the defile which Alexander's army forced. I think it will be found that Marco Polo's geography is less reliable than that of Benjamin. Rabad I, a contemporary of Benjamin, speaks of the land of Gurgan in his Sefer Hakabalah.

Take, too, the extant works on historical method, even the most recent of them, those of J. G. Droysen, E. A. Freeman, A. Tardif, U. Chevalier, and others; the utmost diligence will extract from them nothing in the way of clear ideas beyond the most obvious and commonplace truisms. We willingly recognise that this manner of thinking is not entirely wrong.

The idea of classical erudition, as maintained by them, is extended far beyond its common limitation, and is connected with researches respecting not the language only, but also the religion, philosophy, social economy, arts, and sciences of ancient nations. Among the other great writers on ancient history are Boeckh, Duncker, Droysen, Mommsen, and Kortuem.

On the other hand, men whose information is all that could be desired, whose monographs intended for specialists are full of merit, sometimes show themselves capable, when they write for the public, of grave offences against scientific method. The Germans are habitual offenders: consider Mommsen, Droysen, Curtius, and Lamprecht.

In how brief a time the pupils, as men studying for their own benefit, not the teacher's, would acquire many things! Besides the languages, I studied, at first exclusively under Lepsius's thoroughly admirable instruction, ancient history and archeology. Later I owed most to Gerhard, Droysen, Friederichs, and August Bockh.

The great object, then, is to bring the mind into such a condition of training and cultivation that it shall be a perfect mirror of past times, and of the present, so far as the incompleteness of the present will permit, 'in true outline and proportion. Mommsen, Grote, Droysen, fall short of the ideal, because they drugged ancient history with modern politics.

As he was being led away, Memnon exclaimed, in allusion to Alexander, who was then fast drawing near: "Thy remorse will soon prove my worth; my avenger is not far off." Droysen, Alex. d. Grosse, Diod. The sudden recollection of the woman he loved, and of the countless services rendered him by Phanes, calmed his wrath his hand dropped.

Especially prized by me was a somewhat close acquaintance with the two most eminent professors of modern history then at the university Von Sybel and Droysen. Each was a man of great ability.
