The inner or primary coil P C is of short thick wire of low resistance, and is traversed by the inducing current of a battery B. To increase its inductive effect a core of soft iron I C occupies its middle. The outer or secondary coil S C is of long thin wire terminating in two discharging points D1 D2.

The Siemens D2 machine, as used in the launch shown in the diagram on the wall, is one of the lightest and best motors, it gives 7 horse power on the shaft, with an expenditure of 9 electrical horsepower, and it weighs 658 lb.; its efficiency, therefore, 7/5 or nearly 78 per cent.; but its "coefficient" as an engine of locomotion is 351 that is to say, each pound weight of the motor will yield 351 foot pounds on the shaft.

Let the weight on each of the masses be doubled, and the shafts doubled in area, then we shall have such arrangements as those at c, c2, c3; and if again the shafts and weight be doubled, we shall have d, d2, d3.

The cranial difference between the highest Ape's skull and the lowest Man's is therefore very strikingly brought out by these measurements. In the diagram of the Baboon's skull the dotted lines 'd1 d2', etc., give the angles of the Lemur's and Beaver's skull, as laid down upon the basicranial axis of the Baboon.

An interrupter or hammer "key" interrupts or "makes and breaks" the circuit of the primary coil very rapidly, so as to excite a great many induced currents in the secondary coil per second, and produce energetic sparks between the terminals D1 D2.

Her hull is of steel, 40 feet long and 6 feet beam, and there are seats to accommodate forty adults comfortably. Her accumulators are stowed away under the floor, so is the motor, but owing to the lines of the boat the floor just above the motor is raised a few inches. This motor is a Siemens D2 machine, capable of working up to seven horse power with eighty accumulators.
