Donald walked back and forth on the headland, watching for the fleet. "I wonder if Laud Cavendish was digging for clams up here," thought he, as he observed a spot where the earth appeared to have been disturbed. The marks of Laud's clam-digger were plainly to be seen in the loam, a small quantity of which remained on the sod.
It was three weeks before the body of my father was found. A stormy nor-wester had thrown it high up on shore at the foot of the dunes not far from the mouth of the Rhine, and a clam-digger came to claim the promised reward. My mother went there with me and prayed a long time by the side of the body.
But then both of them were absorbed in the unearthing of the treasure, and Leopold made so much noise with his shovel that the sound of Charley Redmond's approach, if there were any, could not be heard. Leopold looked at Stumpy, and Stumpy looked at Leopold. The money-digger and the clam-digger realized that they were in a bad scrape.
Sid was in a hurry, and unaware that he was wanted by any one in the lane, had broken into a run; but Will had run to so many fires that he was equal to this emergency and overtook Sid, laying a hand on his shoulder. "What do you want?" asked Sid. "I want to catch that man ahead there and borrow his clam-digger." "Come back to the house with me a little while."
Beardsley dug till he came to a rock, and it was plain that no tin box was there. "But I am sure that Laud had been digging here, for I saw the print of his clam-digger," said Donald. "This hole had been dug before," added the sheriff. "Even Laud Cavendish would not be fool enough to bury the box in such an exposed place as this," suggested Captain Patterdale.
