Antiquary, wrote a Life of Sir W. Raleigh prefixed to an ed. of his works , a Dissertation on Pamphlets , and was joint ed. with Dr. Johnson of the Harleian Miscellany. He amassed many interesting facts in literary history, the fruits of diligent, though obscure, industry. The only poem of his that still lives is the beautiful little anacreontic beginning "Busy, curious, thirsty Fly."

You will be pleased with the Anacreontic, written by Lord Middlesex upon Sir Harry Bellendine: I have not seen anything so antique for ages; it has all the fire, poetry, and simplicity of Horace. Ye sons of Bacchus, come and join In solemn dirge, while tapers shine Around the grape-embossed shrine Of honest Harry Bellendine.

On the top floor, spacious salons, richly decorated, were used for large and elaborate receptions of various kinds. At times the members of certain social clubs gave in these rooms subscription balls of anacreontic tendencies, the feminine element of which was recruited among the popular gay favorites of the period.

Louise for art, no matter how humble, always expands the mind has a taste for the beauties of nature, wanting in nearly her whole sex. A flower-stand filled with roses best pleases the majority of women, who cultivate a love of flowers in order to provoke anacreontic and obsolete comparisons from their antiquated admirers. The banks of the Seine are truly enchanting.

In illustration of the freedom they enjoyed in her presence and hearing, one of them, behind the curtain, touched a stringed instrument a cithern and followed the prelude with a song of Anacreontic vein. If my life were but a day One morn, one night, With a golden noon for play, And I, of right, Could say what I would do With it what would I do? Penance to me e'en the stake, And late or soon!

There is not the same objection to the approbation of the other song, which, it will be seen, is a selection of the best parts of the following Anacreontic verses: I ne'er saw nectar on a lip, But where my own did hope to sip. No pearly teeth rejoice my view, Unless a 'yes' displays their hue The prudish lip, that noes me back.
