"Monsieur de Pourceaugnac" is the name of one of Molière's farces, and there is some Latin in it; but Daudet probably had in mind "Le Médecin malgré lui," II, 6. He uses the name Pourceaugnac here because he likes the sound. Rosa, rosae, is the type-noun of the first declension in French grammars of to-day, where we have ordinarily mensa or stella.

From the fact that the romantic movement in France was, more emphatically than in England and Germany, a breach with the native literary tradition, there result several interesting pecularities. The first of these is that the new French school, instead of fighting the classicists with weapons drawn from the old arsenal of mediæval France, went abroad for allies.

In 1539 he obtained the establishment of Nevers and in 1545 the government of Champagne. His first military expedition was in Piedmont under Marshall Montmorency.
