Pride compelled him to make light of the matter in his epistles to the Weimarians.

And a few days later, it was on June 28, 1794, before he had seen Schiller or exchanged further letters with him, he wrote to Charlotte von Kalb that 'since the new epoch Schiller too was becoming more friendly and trustful towards us Weimarians'; whereat he rejoiced, 'hoping for much good from intercourse with him'. So we see that, as the matter then lay in Goethe's mind, it was Schiller who was the distant and distrustful party.
