It always flows in the same direction if the joint is not overheated, or, in other words, raised above a certain temperature. The electromotive force and current of a thermo-electric couple is very much smaller than that given by an ordinary voltaic cell. We can, however, multiply the effect by connecting a number of pairs together, and so forming a pile or battery.

This peculiarity arises from the current starting between the bismuth and antimony at the heated junction. The internal resistance of a "thermo-electric pile" is, of course, very slight, the metals being good conductors, and this fact gives it a certain advantage over the voltaic battery.

Such are the radius of the curve taken by the trajectory of the pencil in a perpendicular magnetic field and the measure of the fall of potential under which the discharge takes place, or the measure of the total quantity of electricity carried in one second and the measure of the calorific energy which may be given, during the same period, to a thermo-electric junction.

This difficulty is obviated by using other methods, such as the employment of thermo-electric couples, such as the very convenient couple of M. le Chatelier; but the graduation of these instruments can only be effected at the cost of a rather bold extrapolation.

This instrument, which is called a thermo-electric pile, or more briefly a thermo-pile, consists of thin bars of bismuth and antimony, soldered alternately together at their ends, but separated from each other elsewhere.

The two electrodes, the gauze, and the coil are connected, as shown, to a receiving telephone, T. Upon the application of heat, as from the flame of a spirit lamp placed below, a thermo-electric current is set up throughout the circuit; in this condition the apparatus becomes a very perfect microphone, and when the pressure between the electrodes is properly adjusted it is a very efficient telephonic transmitter, transmitting articulate speech and musical sounds with remarkable clearness and fidelity.
