The waiting required to cover the period of time, which its own productive process requires, is largely supplied by means of bank overdrafts or other forms of short-period borrowing. More strictly, fixed capital represents the waiting involved in the consumption of durable things; circulating capital the waiting involved in current production.
The spectrum of Beta Lyræ undergoes transitions to some extent analogous, yet involving a different set of considerations. First noticed by Von Gothard in 1882, they were imperfectly made out, two years later, to be of a cyclical character. This, however, could only be effectively determined by photographic means. Beta Lyræ is a "short-period variable."
They represented, in all likelihood, wreckage from a collision with Jupiter, dating, perhaps, so far back as 1791, when Mr. Lane Poor found that one of the fateful meetings to which short-period comets are especially subject had taken place.
The magnitudes are three and eight, distance 9", p. 9°. An interesting multiple is zeta, two of whose stars at least we can see. The chief attraction in Perseus is the changeful and wonderful beta, or Algol, the great typical star among the short-period variables.
Shortly afterwards another comet, revolving in a period of about six years, was discovered by Biela, and given his name. Only two more of these short-period comets were discovered during the first half of last century, but latterly they have been shown to be a numerous family.
