It measured slightly over twenty feet from nose to tail and in circumference was considerably larger than an inflated fire-hose. Suppose that you come with me for a stroll down the Jalan Tiga in Sandakan and see the gaming houses and the opium dens for yourself. There may be wickeder streets somewhere in the East than the Jalan Tiga, but I do not recall having seen them.

Labuk has the towns of Camburcan, Labuk, and Songsohi; its produce is somewhat similar to that of Paytan, with the addition of clove-bark and birds'-nests. Sandakan. This celebrated harbor has been already mentioned as one of the finest in the world.

Sir ALFRED DENT is taking steps to form a Banking Company at Sandakan, the establishment of which would materially assist in the development of the resources of the territory. British North Borneo is not in telegraphic communication with any part of the world, except of course through Singapore, nor are there any local telegraphs.

It is here that the present capital is situated Sandakan, a town containing a population of not more than 5,000 people, of whom perhaps thirty are Europeans and a thousand Chinese., For its age, Sandakan has suffered serious vicissitudes. It was founded by Mr. PRYER, in 1878, well up the bay, but was soon afterwards burnt to the ground.

Of the three mentioned, the more striking is that of Sandakan, which is 15 miles in length, with a width varying from 11 miles, at its entrance, to 5 miles at the broadest part.

In spite of the fact that there are at least twenty men to every woman this is always a tremendous success. It usually ends in everyone getting gloriously drunk. Almost the only other form of entertainment is provided by a company of Malay players which makes periodical visits to Sandakan and Jesselton.

Iron wood is only found in certain districts, notably in Sandakan Bay and on the East coast, being rarely met with on the West coast.

The coast line of the territory is about one thousand miles, and a glance at the map will shew that it is furnished with capital harbours, of which the principal are Gaya Bay on the West, Kudat in Marudu Bay on the North, and Sandakan Harbour on the East. There are several others, but at those enumerated the Company have opened their principal stations.

Though Sandakan is the chief port of British North Borneo, with a population of perhaps fifteen thousand, it has barely a hundred European inhabitants, of whom only a dozen are women.
