It is a recognized thing, and one of the recompenses of old age. We all know that every one had a beautiful grandmother one at least; and if a portrait of one grandmother belies the fact, then there is the other one to fall back upon, of whom, unfortunately, no portrait exists, and she was abs so lute lee lovely!
Instead of being timid and retiring, diffident in speech, and more fond of his study than of the salon, he became on a sudden easy and frank, showing himself in public on all occasions, conversing right and left in a gay, agreeable, and dignified manner; presiding, in fact, over the Salon of Marly, and over the groups gathered round him, like the divinity of a temple, who receives with goodness the homage to which he is accustomed, and recompenses the mortals who offer it with gentle regard.
But a wretch cut off from human society, who can do nothing here below that is useful and good either for himself or for other people, may in such a state find for all lost human felicities many recompenses, of which neither fortune nor men can ever rob him. 'Tis true that these recompenses cannot be felt by all souls, nor in all situations.
Even if it be taken as a figure only, the figure is never so great as the fact it prefigures! "The land shall be drunk with blood, and its dust made fat with fatness, for it is the day of Jehovah's vengeance, the year of recompenses for the controversy against Zion." Isaiah xxxiv. 7, 8. Ps. ii. 4. "God is not mocked!" The ring-leader is first taken, not slain with the others.
"September 5, 1709. "My dear Mrs. Wortley, as she has the entire power of raising, can also, with a word, calm my passions. The kindness of your last recompenses me for the injustice of your former letter; but you cannot sure be angry at my little resentment. You have read that a man who, with patience, hears himself called heretic, can never be esteemed a good Christian.
For my own part, I can say that oftentimes have I enjoyed that intense pleasure, that joyous enthusiasm, that high excitement, which not only recompenses one for the toil and hardships by which it is won, but truly makes them as nothing in comparison to the former.
Fidelity, and skill, and pure morals, should be sought out, and enticed, by generous recompenses, into our domestic service. Duties which should be light and regular. Such and such should be our amusements and employments abroad and at home: and would not this be true happiness? "Oh yes if it may be so."
She is not rich, but offers such and such little recompenses for the little cares and derangements of such services; and I graciously to do everything graciously is a part of my character consent to accept them. O yes! So goes the world. It is the mode.
We get what we are capable of receiving, and what we are capable of receiving depends upon what has been our faithfulness here. Now, that is perfectly consistent with the other side of the truth which the twin parable sets forth viz., that the recompenses of the future are essentially one.
Germany recompenses her veterans by according them, as a right, reputable civil employ when they have served their time as soldiers; the custom of Britain, on the contrary, has been too commonly to leave her scarred and war-worn soldiers to their own resources, or to a pension on which to live is impossible.
