The qua-bird screamed; the swamp-owl hooted; the bullfrog uttered his trumpet-note; and the hideous alligator, horribly bellowing from his gaunt jaws, crawled sulkily out of my way, at times appearing as if he would turn and assail me! "Ho! yonder is light! the sky!" It was but a small patch of the blue heaven a disc, not larger than a dining-plate.

At night other sounds are heard, less agreeable to the ear: the shrill "chirrup" of cicadas and tree-toads ringing so incessantly, that only when they cease do you become conscious of their existence; the dull "gluck-gluck" of the great bullfrog; the sharp cries of the heron and qua-bird; and the sepulchral screech of the great horned owl.

Cranes and herons too were there among others the tall Louisiana crane conspicuous among the smaller species snow-white egrets, the wood ibis, and others of white and roseate hue the snake-darter, with long pointed beak and crouching serpent-like neck the qua-bird, of lugubrious note and melancholy aspect and, fairest of all, the scarlet flamingo.

It caused some noise, however, among the wild creatures of the woods. It woke the white-headed haliaetus, perched upon the head of the tall taxodium, and his maniac laugh sounded harsh and shrill. It woke the grallatores of the swamp the qua-bird, the curlews, and the tall blue herons who screamed in concert.

Among this family of birds are one or two other nocturnal species, including the Qua-Bird, which is common to both continents; but there is little to be said of it that would be interesting in this connection. The Herons, however, and their allied species, are birds of remarkable habits, the enumeration and account of which would occupy a considerable space.
