This transition would be something extraordinary "but if on the contrary, one regards the shells as the necessary products of a special kind of assimilation and of the immoveableness of certain parts of the body, the gradual disappearance might well be considered a process which may take place in various animal-groups with a certain regularity in the course of the phyletic development."
What, however, may be said is that the difficulties presented by what is called phylogeny that is, the relationships of different classes to one another are so great as to have led more than one man of science to proclaim his belief that evolution has been poly and not mono phyletic.
It is conceivable that different phyletic groups of fishes, that is fishes of different descent, might have been modified in the same way, as, for instance, grasshoppers and fleas have been adapted for leaping without being closely related to each other. It is generally held, however, that the Flat-fishes are of common descent.
Perhaps next to dancing in phyletic motivation come personal conflicts, such as wrestling, fighting, boxing, dueling, and in some sense, hunting.
The individual does various specific things with reference to his fellows which are of the nature of instinctive reactions, but both in the phyletic development and the development in the individual, elements that enter into the modern social life as instincts have tended to lose their specific character, have become general or merely organic, have been transformed and have to some extent lost their original significance.
Even the pursuit of pleasure and of sense gratification on the part of the individual belongs to this same group of activities. The Phyletic Activities. As the etymology of the term suggests, these activities are devoted to the propagation, maintenance and protection of the race. a. =Reproduction.= The most fundamental one of the activities for the maintenance of the race is reproduction.
Where not one but several or many professes are taught, the case is far better. Of all work-schools, a good farm is probably the best for motor development. This is due to its great variety of occupations, healthful conditions, and the incalculable phyletic reenforcement from immemorial times.
What do you make of this mysterious sense of duty which lays its magisterial hand upon us and will not be denied? At once various voices rise. Haeckel says the sense of duty is a "long series of phyletic modifications of the phronema of the cortex." That is his interpretation. And Wordsworth: "Stern Daughter of the Voice of God! O Duty!"
