By this method most of the engravings were made for the edition of 1878. Care was taken to employ artists of reputation and the engravings were usually signed by the artist and by the engraver. Before the last edition came out in 1901, photo-engraving had nearly supplanted wood engraving.

The editor wrote a note upon each, and had now the pleasure of seeing one of his objects accomplished, and the public appreciation of his favorite art extending every day. In subsequent years the various methods of photo-engraving were employed instead of the carbon processes of photography, and the "Portfolio" was one of the first English periodicals to give reproductions of pen-drawings.

W.H. Holmes is in charge of this division. All illustrations will, as far as possible, be produced by relief methods, such as wood-engraving, photo-engraving, etc.

You see, if I had a photo-engraving plant of my own, I could do a good deal of outside jobbing as well, and the investment would pay ten per cent. But it takes money to make money. I wouldn't want to put in any dinky, one-horse affair. I want a good plant. I've been figuring out the business. Besides the plant, there would be the expense of a high grade paper.

The newspapers had the wonderful Hoe presses; they had cheap paper; they had excellent type, cast by machinery; they had a satisfactory process of multiplying forms of type by stereotyping; and at length came a new process of making pictures by photo-engraving, supplanting the old-fashioned process of engraving on wood.

At first he did not know that his letters, always typewritten, were copied and objectionable matter omitted, and his signature reproduced by the photo-engraving process, separately each time. But before long, several letters came back to him rubber-stamped: "Not passable. Please revise." It took Benda two days to cool down and rewrite the first letter.

It will be seen that this process may be used with advantage instead of that of photo-engraving with bitumen, in cases where it is not advisable to use acids. One of my friends, Mr. Fisch, suggests the plan which seems to deserve a careful investigation of combining this process with that where bitumen is employed; it would be done somewhat in the following way.
