Music has always been called the language of the emotions, but Wagner based his views not only on the popular notion, but on the metaphysical theories of Schopenhauer; in particular, on the view that music is the objectification of the will. Herbert Spencer followed with the thesis that music has its essential source in the cadences of emotional speech.
It builds up bodies, organs, and parts, and keeps them in operation and function. The Creative Will is directed to the outward expression of Life to the objectification of Life. You may call this energy the "Universal Life Energy" if you wish, but, to those who know it, it is a Will an active, living Will, in full operation and power, pressing forward toward the manifestation of objective life.
If our appreciation were less general, it might be more real, and if we trained our imagination into exclusiveness, it might attain to character. The differentia of aesthetic pleasure: its objectification. There is, however, something more in the claim to universality in aesthetic judgments than the desire to generalize our own opinions.
There are two characteristics of aesthetic feeling in its relation to sensations and ideas which must be taken into account in any explanation; its objectification in them and the universality of this connection. Expression is embodiment. We find gayety in the colors of the painting, joy in the musical tones, happiness in the pictured face, tenderness in the sculptured pose.
He speaks of himself as he is, or rather as he was. He sums himself up, and points to his achievement. This I have been, says he, this I have done. This comprehensive and impartial view, this synthesis and objectification of experience, constitutes the liberation of the soul and the essence of sublimity.
This may help us to understand better the relations between aesthetics and hedonics, and the nature of that objectification in which we have placed the difference between beauty and pleasure.
While we concede the objectification of pleasure in all these cases, we cannot, it would seem, admit a corresponding change from non-aesthetic to aesthetic feelings. The personal attitude towards an object, based on sentiments objectified in it, and the aesthetic attitude are two different things.
