Called also Aitu iti, or small gods, from the household gods then worshipped, and who were specially implored to bless the family for the year "with strength to overcome in quarrels and in battle." This month was called Lo, from the name of a small fish which comes in plentiful shoals at that time.
Thou art Pasupati; atodyah pratodanarhah pasavah yasya iti. The commentator explains that Tarangavit, which is literally conversant with waves means one that is acquainted with the joys or pleasures that arise from the possession or enjoyment of worldly things, for such joys may truly be likened to waves which appear and disappear on the bosom of the sea or ocean of Eternity.
It means "the biting snake," from aji or azi, "a snake" or "serpent," and dahaka, "biting." Amytis is probably ama, "active, great," with the ordinary feminine suffix -iti, found in Armaiti, Khnathaiti, and the like. If, however, the name should be read as Armamithres, the probable derivation will be from rama, ace. of raman, "pleasure," which is also the root of Rama-tea.
Afterwards Bhagiratha, a prince of the same race, brought down Ganga from heaven for their redemption. Identical with the universe because capable of conferring the fruition of every wish. Vrihati literally, large or vast, is explained by the commentator as implying foremost or superior. Madhumatim is explained as conferring the fruits of all good actions. Viswam avanti iti.
At the head of the valley, in a grove of breadfruit, lived Taua a Tiaroroa, his vahine Rehua, and their two children, whose bodies were as round as the breadfuit, and whose eyes were like the black borders of the pearl-shells of the Conquered atolls. They were named Pipiri and Rehua iti, but were known as Pipiri Ma, the inseparables.
The word 'iti, thus, here intimates that the answer is meant to dispose of the question, 'Do you know how? &c. Sraddha becomes moon, rain, food, seed, embryo in succession, and thus the water comes to be called man. Samh. 'On account of this not being stated by Scripture'; not so, on account of those who perform sacrifices and so on being understood.
The etymology of Hara is thus explained by the commentator; Hanti iti ha sulah; tam rati or adatte. This is very fanciful. The sense is this: a nipana is a shallow pond or ditch where cattle drink. The very oceans are the nipanas or Mahadeva.
